Genetics, order cardiology, unhealthy genealogy and art connect...

Cardiologic-genetic research: genetic mutation causes cardiac dysrhythmia in families from Limburg.

In this case it concerns a cardiologic-genetic problem, order which influences a large group of people. Artist Claudia Volders came up with the idea of involving herself with this process from an early stage on, to make this study and process visual for a larger amount of people through art. There is no better time than right now to build a bridge between art and science and make scientifically difficult knowledge accessible to the audience. Because this audience really wants to understand science. The audience wants to experience through emotion what role science plays in their lives. A connection is made between IQ and EQ.

The current, complex ways of doing research in the cardiologic-genetic field are the outcome of years of developments. Many scientific studies conducted today, are of such a detailed nature that only direct colleagues can still comprehend the jargon. An understandable translation focused on a society with incredible scientific results is both a wish coming from scientists and a challenge for artists. Below is a project where this type of translation is made.

In the AZM (Academisch Ziekenhuis Maastricht) research is done regarding cardiac dysrhythmia, obtained through a genetic mutation where the founder mutation drops to 1600. A complex study since many people from several generations can obtain / have obtained heart problems when they are a carrier of this mutation. Cardiologists Paul Volders and Rachel ter Bekke have reached the point where the problem will become clear, but it will take some time before they will be able to answer the question: why does one half of the carriers develop a certain cardiac dysrhythmia while the other half develops a different kind of cardiac dysrhythmia? It will be a study comparable to the search for a needle in a haystack. It will be very intensive.
It is a cardiologic-genetic problem that influences a large group of people.

In this case it concerns a cardiologic-genetic problem, which influences a large group of people. Artist Claudia Volders came up with the idea of involving herself with this process from an early stage on, to make this study and process visual to a larger amount of people through art. Now, to build a bridge between art and science and make scientifically difficult knowledge accessible to the audience. Because this audience really wants to understand science. The audience wants to experience through emotion what role science plays in their lives.

A connection is made between IQ and EQ. Scientists who are talented at communicating, are already using the connection between knowledge and emotion. For scientists it will be an addition, when art can help them visualize the bridge between IQ and EQ.

Aantekeningen Cardiologie

Claudia Volders is working on a series of paintings, where she uses attributes from this cardiologic study. In an exposition planned with poli cardiology of the AZM, a painting of 150 x 150 cm will be exposed, which will create doubt about whether it is a portrayal of the macro-cosmos or the micro-cosmos. Claudia Volders is aware that this DNA-study is focused on the micro-cosmos, but when the average person looks at the heart, which is linked to love, this painting gets a macro-cosmic appearance. By making this visual, artistic translation, Claudia Volders connects this research to the coming time.

Ten spheres appear from the painting (a decagonal visualizes the cross-cut of a DNA-strand), attached to arms that can be stretched out and turned away. Every sphere is a part of the study. For example, think of a sphere containing a USB-drive with all of the study results. Another sphere contains the family tree-research from the genealogist. Yet another sphere is filled with keywords. An assignment Claudia Volders gave to cardiologist Rachel ter Bekke was to write down a keyword related to the study every day. Another sphere is filled with ground, taken from the house where the parents who had the first mutation resided. This way every sphere has a part of the information. The sum of these spheres filled with information (and explanation) will give the audience a better view of this amazing study, which will definitely receive international attention.

Other paintings, inspired by this study, all have the function of visualizing this study.

Claudia Volders has used the current crisis as a positive source of inspiration. Art has a lot more to offer than just a pretty picture on an empty wall. Art is a means of communication. Art can be used as a connection between art and emotion.  Now is the time to use the synergy between art and science. More and more people (and scientists) are becoming aware of that.
